Here are some key facts about monkey pox... -a rare viral infection first discovered in a 9 year old boy in the Democratic Republic of Congo -occurs primarily in central and western parts of Africa near tropical rain forests -it is mainly a zoonotic infection (transmitted from animals to humans) through contact with blood, other body fluids or tissues of infected animals. -animals implicated include rope squirrels, tree squirrels, Gambian rats, striped mice, dormice and primates -can however also be transmitted from human to human contact with respiratory tract and skin lesion secretions -monkey pox is similar to the already eradicated small pox, however much milder.
