Here are some key facts about monkey pox... -a rare viral infection first discovered in a 9 year old boy in the Democratic Republic of Congo -occurs primarily in central and western parts of Africa near tropical rain forests -it is mainly a zoonotic infection (transmitted from animals to humans) through contact with blood, other body fluids or tissues of infected animals. -animals implicated include rope squirrels, tree squirrels, Gambian rats, striped mice, dormice and primates -can however also be transmitted from human to human contact with respiratory tract and skin lesion secretions -monkey pox is similar to the already eradicated small pox, however much milder. In fact, vaccination with small pox vaccines(no longer available to the general population) was noted to largely contain the monkey pox virus. -symptoms include: ...
